Although not quite at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own Donald Trump moment this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood. “This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the beginning of a current administration. “Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life away from worry.” The event, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House. The pig, contributed by a first responder, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The trend became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection. A Future Secured This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement. “The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message. “It embodies the character of Miami: vibrant, varied, and based in heritage that bring people together. Annually, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.” Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked the pig's pardon.
