Igor Jesus Fires Twice as The Reds Round Off European Group Stage with Win over Hungarian Opponents

Forest striker in action
The Brazilian forward has now scored eleven strikes in every tournament for the club this campaign.

Match Summary

  • Forest were already through to the knockout round.
  • Bence Otvos deflection gives Nottingham Forest a first-half lead.
  • Igor Jesus' fifth goal in Europe puts the team in control.
  • Striker nets again with a sharp finish in the latter period.
  • The midfielder caps a excellent performance with a penalty.

Igor Jesus scored twice as Nottingham Forest concluded the league phase of the European competition with a comfortable triumph against Ferencvaros at the City Ground.

Forest had already secured a place in the knockout round play-offs and went into this fixture with a small chance of making the league's elite, even though they required other matches to fall in their favor.

That did not happen but this assured performance will give the supporters confidence that their team can come through the two-legged play-off to reach the round of sixteen.

A Ferencvaros midfielder struck the post with a headed effort inside the first 10 minutes for the visitors – who are managed by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from then on.

Forest opened the scoring in the early stages when Ryan Yates' cross was turned into his own net by Bence Otvos and doubled the lead four minutes later – the striker firing an effort in at the far post for his tenth strike of the campaign.

The forward's 11th came soon after the restart when he timed a run perfectly to escape the backline and then drive an effort past the goalkeeper.

The third strike killed off Ferencvaros' aspirations of making a comeback and instead the hosts added a fourth when the impressive McAtee scored from a penalty after a foul by the unfortunate Otvos inside the penalty area on Dan Ndoye.

The Europa League qualifying round draw takes place on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Nottingham Forest could be drawn against either the Turkish side or the Greek club.

"It is not just the scoreline, there was that feel about it. I want these players to do well as a unit, the entire team," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"That was another stride forward, but it is a positive one."

Forest Analysis: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Observes from Stands

Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in Europe this term with six of his eleven strikes coming in the Europa League.

This double also means he has scored a trio of strikes in his last two games and the prospect of competition for his position in the forward line could be providing motivation.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was recently brought in temporarily and he was watching this match from the directors' box.

That may well have been on the striker's thoughts as he was outstanding against Ferencvaros, delivering two superb finishes and overall being a constant threat to the opposition backline with his pace and movement.

Jesus was not the only one in impressing, with McAtee turning in his finest display in a Forest jersey since joining from Manchester City last summer, while Dan Ndoye also performed well.

These encouraging performances will give the club some renewed optimism as they turn their attention to pulling further away from the bottom three when they host their London rivals on Sunday.

"All you can ask for is a response," continued Dyche.

"I have always trusted their commitment or their loyalty or integrity. It is just go and show your ability.

"McAtee was excellent and Dan was incredibly lively. Jesus got another couple and these are good signs."
