Just prior to the announcement, a nervous thought raced through the golfer's mind. He admitted he was concerned, "Please don't let it be a Formula 1 star this time."

"This has been a great night for golf," the champion said. "Our game was honored in such a major way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and with any luck we can build upon that."

Choosing not to stay for the post-ceremony celebrations, McIlroy was already focusing on his upcoming event. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and flown to the UK, he was returning immediately to the sunshine state.

"I've had a whirlwind 24 hours," he said. "I am anticipating a little bit of rest over Christmas."

Nevertheless, McIlroy made clear he has no desire to rest on his laurels, despite achieving the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a few good years in me," he claimed.

"Further big titles, tour championships, team competitions, that's great. But if you feel like you can keep improving and have the hunger, that's the key."

Meanwhile, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the team award, also applauded golf's stellar night and his great friend's personal achievement.

"Those are the moments that will remain with us forever so to get the public's recognition for that is amazing," he commented. "Seeing Rory win, I think he has earned it so much."

Upon hearing that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its long history, Fleetwood chuckled before quipping, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"

Looking Ahead

His goal is to secure his first major next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "As long as you want to be the greatest possible version of yourself, and you're still driven, you'll find things to improve," he noted.

Football Loyalty

Before McIlroy left, a last query was raised. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. Might he be persuaded to do it again after his recent triumphs?

"If they quit letting in multiple scores in Manchester," he answered with a smile. "Improvements are being made. There's a hint of hope around."

After a truly spectacular season, it's understandable that Rory McIlroy is seeing the bright side.
